Raising Supermen or Superwomen?

By Wolf Gnat

The use of chromosome 6 deletion in a new 'Super Babies' project creates public outrage. The deletion of chromosome 6 from the human DNA genome eliminates the sensation of pain, hunger, or the need for sleep. This is perhaps why a group of scientists decided to bring to the world fifty babies via artificial birthing pods with chromosome 6 edited out their DNA.

For a long while, the project had flown under the radar. But when one of the children, now age four, freed a gorilla at the zoo and survived a very generous thank-you hug, all eyes were on these new super tots.

When word got out that the child was okay due to his biological makeup, the public lept into protest mode, hiring androids to hold holographic signs for them in front of the scientists’ lab, DNA day and night. Some had mostly arbitrary comments about them, such as: “Humans Sleep!”, “Hunger is Good!” Which was somewhat ironic coming from a group of hired protest drones.

The attention to the experiment raised valid questions about its motive. What are these children being developed for? Are these children the first batch of future soldiers?

Finally, the truth was leaked by a junior member of the lab that had a moral impasse. This "Super Baby" project was government-funded; its goal was to raise these super babies to adulthood; and then send them into the farthest reaches of space to fend for themselves.

Their hypothesis was that without the need for sleep and food, or feeling the discomforts of space, this new batch of "improved" humans with heightened endurance, could survive for thousands of years in space. The hopeful scientists believed their little mutations could reach new worlds and civilization on behalf of humanity.

It seems that regardless of the worldwide protests, the project will go forth. The bigger question now will be how Earth will survive these rag rats till they leave? What happens when they release the bio-engineered dragons from the Zoo?
