Luxury Spacecraft Stolen by Rebellious Elders

By Benedict Tally

Last week a luxury spacecraft designed to take tourists to explore worlds beyond our solar system was stolen by a group of age-challenged men and women who had resided in the same nursing home. Though this is a curious tale that any one of us would have loved to write, we thought who better to tell the story than one of the culprits.

We present to you a tale by Benedict Tally, a late-blooming thief.

Dear Intergalactic Space Chronicle,

My name is Benedict Tally, and I am among the two dozen old-timers that have taken over ‘The Bright’ Luxury Space Cruiser. You may have been wondering why we have stolen this ship, that is,  if you have woken yourself up from virtual reality long enough to notice the world around you.

When I was a little boy, space still seemed like an impossible dream. But it was a dream many shared and many more worked hard to make part of our current reality.

I was among those dreamers, always looking hopefully at the stars, but I was not from a wealthy background and I had to work hard for all my worldly needs and then for those of my children, and their children, and their designer babies and genetically modified teens.

I started out as a humble engineer working on the first frontier of robotics. During those times we didn’t have emotional software or replicated human tissue fabrics for android skin. We just tried to make robots to help our daily tasks.

Soon, I moved up the ladder and became part of the first team to work on commercial air-vehicles. As we released our newest line, I couldn’t even afford one of those air-cars for myself.

Time and time again I found myself working on the cutting edge of other people’s new creations. All the while, I was slowly and steadily working on my own creation. Believe it or not, this luxury spacecraft was that creation. One that was stolen from me by someone who could have bought ten of me just to floss their teeth.

He even hired me to engineer my own creation without giving me any credit for it, if you can believe the audacity. After working on all the ins and outs of this ship, I began to feel the damage of time on my very old body. I may have looked no older than forty, but my bones knew the truth. I never felt quite comfortable with the idea of a complete exo-skeleton replacement, so I had to finally accept time has caught up with me. Seventy-five of my great-grandchildren helped me move into a nursing home. If you’re wondering where all the money went...

So instead of waiting bitterly for the end of my time in a nursing home, my new friends and I decided to take a stand or rather a cabin with a view on the mint spacecraft, ‘The Bright’.

By the laws of the United States I know I have perhaps steered away from what is perceived as right. But by laws of nature, the laws of space and time, we had to seize our last opportunity for an adventure of a lifetime. We are the timely voyagers and we plan to see what else is out there while we still can.

Sincerely,
Benedict Tally

Clocking out!
