Consumers Wake-up After Two Years in a Virtual Reality Program

By William Freedman

The virtual reality program “Civilization” is known for its extreme nature.  To enter the virtual program one must commit to a continuous connection of two-years, minimum. That means no breaks from virtual reality, just full time living in “The V”.

Of course, to do so one must prepare an auto food injection supply for over two years and an auto excrement collection device. The consumer must also have a trusted guardian to make sure all one’s devices are working properly at all times. A lot can go wrong.

Luckily for the first band of users, everything on the physical side went quite smoothly. However, there is much to question about the mental outcomes of being two years under.

During their time in “Civilization” participants were to build a new society on a virtual alien planet from scratch. No tech was allowed to be used to build one’s designated society unless it was built it from the materials you found in the program.

Many participants downloaded the basics of how motors run, how electricity works, and how to create silicon and plastic. Many studied ancient societies to prepare for the inevitable group dynamics. And a few did not prepare at all. Those few seemed to have been the most shell-shocked coming out.

But it seems that all the participants were a bit shocked and confused when they awoke from this virtual reality. Some immediately begged to return their newly formed civilization.

Though the policies for extended virtual realities are new and still being established, right now for every year in virtual reality a month in the real world is required by law to prevent addiction and to make sure the person is still maintaining his or her physical existence.

It is said that these consumers had gone back in time in a sense and experienced the fundamentals of society in a way that hasn’t been available to humanity in centuries.  There were mini wars and revolutions, new holidays created, a new community with music and culture of its own.

Marisa, a community leader in the "Civilization", told the paper: “I’m counting the days before I return my home”.

We asked Marisa, “Why not connect with your friends who were also disconnected from the program and build your own community here in the corporal reality?” To which she replied:

“It’s all an illusion anyway, might as well be green, new and beautiful.”

Perhaps she right, but I still like access to my happy spiced coffee and my personalized Ai birds in my illusion. Also, I'm not a fan of those poop bags.
